Shoemakers are also known as
cordwainers,
derived from a place named Cordoba in Spain, famous for
its leather.
Before the introduction
of machinery these men supplied the needs of their neighbourhoods.
Their goods were handmade and hand sewn. In villages and
towns they were by far the most numerous of craftsmen.
The shoemaker’s
craft has dwindled in the light of automation, however
a handful of traditionalists carry on this skill in sheds
and workshops worldwide.
