Medieval shoes

Peter Prince has been researching the art of handmade shoes for some years.

His extensive interest in the methods of the medieval shoemaker has lead to him re-exploring past designs for the discerning modern customer.

The mixture of authentic and simple design in Prince’s Shoes appeals to followers of both history and fashion.

The shoes themselves are made and lasted by hand from best vegetable tanned leather.

The revived techniques, exhibiting a knack for finish and detail, are the trademarks of this range of footwear.

The Lasts

Peter Prince uses two lasts both superb fitting & modern in style.

  • the first is a beautiful slim pointed last based on a 14th century shoe found at Barnard’s Castle London.
  • The second a slightly asymmetrical last based on a 13th shoe found at Seal House, London.

Peter Prince Materials

The uppers are hand sewn from soft fine grain vegetable tanned leather (no chemicals) antiqued and hand polished to bring out the natural beauty and grain of this special leather. The shoes come in three colours tan, brown & black. Soles & insoles are hand cut from vegetable tanned leather, which absorbs then permeates out the foot’s moisture.

In 1305 shoe sizes became standardised, each size equivalent to one third of an inch or the length of a barley corn.
